“Delivering environmental benefits”
If you’re looking for a sustainable print partner that can help you measure and reduce the environmental impact of your business, you have come to the right place.
Focus Print Group are industry leaders in green printing and cleaner, sustainable production. We have been working hard at it for over ten years and our award-winning green printing credentials are benchmarked to ISO-14001 Environmental Management standards, as well as FSC certified.
Below are some of the ways we work towards sustainability in our processes and use of materials:
Sustainable paper sourcing
All Focus Print Group facilities use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) papers as our house stock.
We also commit to the following to help maximise the sustainability of our paper supply:
- We use only FSC or PEFC certified paper as our standard house stock
- We provide a full range of paper options with a 50% or more Post-Consumer recycled content, and encourage the use of these papers wherever possible
- We provide a full range of low-impact papers including paper that complies with the Process Chlorine Free (PCF) Standard
Reducing our energy use has been a key priority at Focus Print Group throughout our sustainability journey. During the past ten years we have completed many energy efficiency projects, such as enclosing our heat-producing equipment, installing windows with a heat-reflecting coating and continuing to upgrade our equipment and lighting to more energy efficiency models. We even implemented a ‘no-tie policy’ to help reduce the need for air conditioners!
As a result, our energy use has decreased by 53% since we first begin measuring in 2001.
The Clean Technology Investment Program
The Clean Technology Investment Program provides $1 billion in total funding to help manufacturers become cleaner, more efficient and more sustainable. The Programs were launched by Minister Combet on February 16, 2012 and are expected to support 3,000 similar projects over coming years.
We have received a grant under the Program to improve energy and carbon efficiency at our Matraville site. We anticipate that the project will achieve a 65% reduction in carbon emissions intensity and savings of almost $50,000 annually in energy costs.
We have taken many measures to reduce our water use since we began our sustainability journey in 2001. Two important parts of our water reduction strategy were designing a microswitch to reduce water use in the plate-development process and raising awareness of water conservation among our staff.
Our water use has decreased by 96% (adjusted per $ of sales) since we began measuring in 2001. We believe we are now one of the most, if not the most, efficient water users in the industry.
At Focus Print Group we have worked hard on our waste stream management and we are proud of our achievements. We separate all plastics, paper, aluminium, timber pallets and ink cartridges on site for recycling and as a result our waste-to-landfill has dropped by a huge 94.5% (adjusted per $ of sales) since we began measuring and reducing our waste in 2001.
Using materials and managing our waste more effectively saves us tens of thousands of dollars each year in expenses which allows us to offer a higher quality product at a lower cost to the environment and to you.
Reduced Chemical Usage
We’ve made huge advances in our elimination or reduction of harmful solvents and chemicals over the years. We’ve shared many of our innovative processes with other printing companies in an effort to reduce the overall environmental impact of our industry.
Over 95% of the inks that we use at Focus Print Group are vegetable-based inks which are produced from soy and linseed oil. These inks are made from renewable sources and contain none of the mineral solvents that traditional printing inks contain.
In collaboration with our suppliers we have also developed our own unique ink delivery system which utilizes recyclable plastic cartridges and has reduced our waste ink to less than 1%.
One of the first steps we took to reduce our impact on the environment was to eliminate alcohol from our printing processes. We were one of the first printers to cease using alcohol and we are proudly 100% alcohol-free today.
We have reduced our use of toxic volatile solvents by over 90%, replacing them with citrus-based alternatives. As a result the air quality in our printing factories has improved considerably and we have reduced our supply chain greenhouse gas emissions via the production of these chemicals.
Focus Print Group introduced computer-to-plate (CTP) technology in 2000 and it has had a huge impact on our productivity and environmental performance. CTP eliminates the need for film and its associated chemistry and it improves make-ready time, machine time and labour costs. Today our plates are all 100% CTP technology.
